News - Spring 2006

Congratulations to Scott Morton, Scholars Program assistant director, for recently publishing his first book!  Scott's book is a sci-fi comedy titled "MadSpace: Book I." It is the first part of a duology, with the second part coming out later next year. The second book will be titled: "InsaneSpace." If you love sci-fi, and if you are interested in zany, wacky stories, you might want to check it out. You can order it online at Books-A-Million, Barnes and Noble or directly from the publisher AuthorHouse.

And So It Is - Senior Exhibit by Lauren Woods will take place April 17-30 in the Spring Hill College Eichold Gallery.  For more information and to see a preview of her artwork, check out Lauren's highlight on page 2!

A new opportunity is available to Bedsole Scholars in the area of career guidance: Career Colloquium, a series of occasional conversations between Bedsole Scholars and working professionals on career-related themes. These conversations can be arranged at a convenient location, perhaps the Bedsole office and can be one-on-one in nature. Whenever a student expresses the need or interest in seeking guidance from a professional in the area of his or her career choice, The Scholars Program will invite that student and others with similar interests to meet with a business professional leader experienced in that particular career. This should be of great help to the student in choosing academics, graduate schools and career opportunities.  For more information, or to sign up, e-mail our office.

A new policy has been instituted regarding our summer intern programs, i.e., Entre Prep and Freedom School.  This policy will affect scholars who sign up for these programs in 2007 or later.  Please read the article in the section below for pertinent information.

The Scholars Program has re-instituted a Bedsole Big Brother/Big Sister program that was in place several years ago.  For more information, see the Big Brother/Big Sister article below.

Mark your calendar!  The J.L. Bedsole Scholars Program Leadership Convocation 2006 will take place Friday and Saturday, July 21-22.  The theme of this year's Convocation is Personal Enrichment Through the Arts.  Dr. David Pollick, president of Birmingham-Southern College, is the scheduled keynote speaker for the Friday night banquet, which will be held in Space 301 in downtown Mobile.  Post-banquet entertainment will be provided by the Saenger Theater, and Scholars will spend Friday night in the Riverview Plaza Hotel on Water Street.  Saturday workshops will be held in the Space 301/Saenger complex.  Look for more detailed information in the summer edition of "The Bedsole Bits" due out in June.

The J.L. Bedsole Scholars Program is now accepting associate degree scholarship applications for the 2006-07 academic year.  This scholarship is offered to qualifying applicants who wish to pursue an associate degree in Aviation & Powerplant Technology offered at Enterprise-Ozark Community College's Mobile aviation campus.  If you have family members, friends, or neighbors back home who are seniors in high school or recent graduates interested in a career in the aviation industry, please direct them to our website to learn more about the scholarship requirements and download an application.  The postmark deadline for the aviation application is June 30th.
